Bhagwan Krishna, a revered Hindu deity, was born on the 8th of Bhadon, known as Krishna Janmashtami. Followers of Hinduism celebrate Krishna’s birthday every year on the 8th of the same month.
Hindu communities all over the world, including in the United States, celebrate Krishna Janmashtami. It is one of their most sacred events, during which they worship Lord Krishna and celebrate his birthday. Krishna Vasudev Yadav, formally known as Krishna, was one of the 23 incarnations of Bhagwan Vishnu.
Bhagwan Krishna was born to destroy unrighteousness from the earth. He killed the demon Kansh to establish Dharma in the world. Hindu scriptures tell several stories about Krishna. He performed many leelas (divine plays) on Earth to teach humanity important lessons.
A story regarding Krishna’s birth and his journey from Mathura to Gokul reveals the essence of Krishna Janmashtami.
Story Behind Krishna Janmashtami
Kansh, the cruel King of Mathura, received a divine warning that the 8th son of his own sister would be his downfall. In an attempt to change his fate, the King decided to kill all of his sister Devaki’s sons. He successfully killed six of her sons, while the seventh was believed to have been destroyed in the womb.
But in the case of the 8th son, many miracles took place, as this time, the god himself was coming to earth. According to the scriptures, Lord Krishna was born on the 8th of Bhadon during a dark night, precisely at midnight.
This time, Vasudev, the father of Krishna, received a divine message instructing him to take the newborn baby to Gokul and exchange him with his friend’s daughter. Despite being imprisoned, Vasudev obeyed, though it seemed an impossible task. However, divine miracles made the impossible possible.
Vasudev successfully exchanged baby Krishna with his friend’s daughter. When Kansh attempted to kill her, she transformed into a goddess, eluding his grasp. Later, when Krishna grew up, he returned to Mathura, killed Kansh, and eradicated his evil reign from the earth.
Since that day, people have celebrated the 8th of Bhadon as Bhagwan Krishna’s birthday. They call it Krishna Janmashtami. Not only Hindus but also Christians, Muslims, and Sikhs celebrate this festival.
