The Detroit Pistons reportedly fired coach Monty Williams after just one season. The team’s performance during the season has been cited as the primary reason for his departure.
Some media reports suggest that the Detroit Pistons have punished coach Monty Williams for the team’s poor performance. They have terminated the newly hired coach after a 28-game regular-season losing streak.
However, there has been no official comment from the Pistons or Monty Williams on this matter yet. This pivotal decision cost the Detroit Pistons an additional $65 million, remaining funds per the contract.
According to an ESPN source, the decision to fire Monty Williams was made at the ownership level. Even the Pistons president of basketball operations, Trajan Langdon, who had been meeting with Williams regularly, was absent in the decision-making process.
Why did the Detroit Pistons fire Monty Williams?
Since no official announcement regarding the termination has come, it will be too early to report anything. However, the most probable reason for Williams’ termination may be the Detroit Pistons’ poor performance in the season.
In the last NBA season, the Pistons tied a record with a 28-game regular-season losing streak. They finished the season with a league-worst 14-68 record.
However, they have not been so good in their last five seasons. In the previous five seasons, they are 94-290 (.245), the worst in the league. DP finished the season at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and held the worst record.
Monty Williams’ Achievements as a Coach
Monty Williams is the former head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans from 2010 to 2015. He led them to the playoffs twice, helped young players grow, and improved the team.
His most significant success was with the Phoenix Suns from 2019 to 2023. In 2021, he took the Suns to the NBA Finals, their first since 1993. He won the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2022. He turned the Suns into one of the top teams in the league.
Williams also coached the USA Men’s National Team and was an assistant coach in international games, adding to his strong coaching record.
