Several complaints have been filed against Hindu religious leader Ramgiri Maharaj. People are demanding the arrest of the Mahant after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammad.
India is a country where people often overlook serious warnings. Despite clear labels on cigarette packets stating that smoking is injurious to health, many continue to smoke. People even film videos in dangerous areas of the hills, ignoring signs that warn of potential death.
However, when it comes to religion, the attitude is entirely different. People take it very seriously. Even those with little to no understanding of their own religion often become self-proclaimed spokespersons. They engage in heated debates and conflicts without truly grasping the core teachings of their faith.
People with a similar mindset often provoke others for fame. They also incite riots and deaths and damage communal harmony. Recently, a religious leader – though it is difficult to call him so – deliberately made a statement aimed at provoking another religious community. Unfortunately, his plan worked. The other community has come out on the streets to protest peacefully.
Meanwhile, political leaders are exploiting this situation to mobilize their target voters, thereby fuelling the flames of unrest. Religious figures are spewing nonsense to gain popularity in their communities. And those with a lot of free time are unwittingly becoming messengers and spreading these messages on social media.
It is important to note that these issues are not one-sided. While we do not support anything that is illegal or hurts people’s sentiments, provocations, and tensions are coming from both sides.
What did Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj say?
The controversy began with a statement by Ramgiri Maharaj, which has sparked widespread outrage. This statement, considered extremely hurtful and derogatory by members of the other community, has formed the root of the current unrest.
In his remarks, Ramgiri Maharaj referred to Prophet Mohammed, specifically the Prophet’s relationship with a six-year-old girl, and made sweeping judgments about the entire community based on this historical event.
It’s important to note that only those with deep religious knowledge can accurately assess the validity of such statements. We will refrain from commenting on the accuracy or truthfulness of Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj’s remarks.
However, the response from the offended community has been severe, leading to protests demanding justice. In a democratic country like India, it is within the rights of citizens to demand action against statements that hurt their sentiments. However, the re-emergence of “Sar Tan Se Juda” slogans is worrying and we do not support it.
Some have also called for Ramgiri Maharaj’s arrest, and the police are currently investigating the matter. Mahant himself has stated that he believes he has done nothing wrong and will address the issue if he receives any legal notice.
Ultimately, we urge everyone to resolve this matter peacefully. If something is inherently good, it won’t be tarnished by someone else’s criticism. Conversely, if something is wrong, it remains wrong, regardless of what anyone says.
