A severe thunderstorm in Rome, New York, has caused extensive damage to landmarks and infrastructure. The heavy damage prompted local authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Rome, New York, was caught off guard as a powerful thunderstorm swept through the city. The sudden weather event resulted in widespread chaos and damage. Strong winds and torrential rainfall affected various neighborhoods and surrounding areas.

It left a trail of devastation, particularly impacting several iconic landmarks and buildings in Rome. The powerful winds forcefully knocked the B-52 airplane off its foundation, a prominent fixture in the city. St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church suffered severe structural damage when its steeple collapsed during the storm.

Similarly, the First Presbyterian Church also lost its steeple to the powerful gusts. Additionally, the thunderstorm demolished the building housing the beloved Paul Revere mural on West Dominick Street.

In response to the crisis, Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan declared a state of emergency for Rome. Urgent safety advisories were issued, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel to ensure their safety. Authorities emphasized the danger posed by live power lines scattered throughout the city.

Additionally, the local police suggested residents treat all downed lines as live and dangerous.

Emergency services quickly mobilized to respond to incidents reported across the city, including building collapses, fires, and widespread power outages.

Efforts to restore electricity were already underway. However, the exact timeline for full recovery cannot be revealed now.

Damage Caused by the Thunderstorm in Rome

The storm was very severe, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. According to some media reports, the thunderstorm ruined many trees, buildings, churches, and more. Buildings on Bell Road, Henry Street, and Lyndale Drive were reported damaged due to the storm. It also caused a vehicle fire in front of the Capitol Theater.
