Russian Skater Banned for 4 Years, Medal to be Taken Away

Russian skater Kamila Valieva

Russian skater Kamila Valieva has been officially banned for four years. She had failed the drug test before the Beijing Olympic Games.

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva won the gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. However, she soon came into the limelight not because of her medal but because of her positive doping test.

The investigation of her doping was in progress for the last two years under the supervision of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The court has now concluded the investigation by ruling her out from the games for four years.

The court has also said that all her medals from the date Kamila came positive in the doping test should be taken back. Since the Russian skater was found positive before the Beijing game, she will also lose her gold medal in the Olympics.

When will Kamila come back to play?

Kamila has been banned from figure skating for four years for violating anti-doping rules. Her ban will be applicable from December 25, 2021. And it will last till the same date in 2025.

This means the Russian skater can play in the Winter Olympics scheduled in 2026. However, it will depend on Russian officials’ call.

How did Kamila win gold even after coming positive in the dope test?

Kamila’s dope test was done about a month before the Olympics. However, the test results did not come for more than a month, and Kamila played in this period and won the gold medal.

The results of her dope test were announced on February 8, a day after Russia won the gold. Once the results became public, the controversy started.

What has the court said?

After hearing and analyzing all the facts, the court held that Kamila had violated the rules, but unknowingly. CAS said, “The CAS panel concluded that Ms. Valieva was not able to establish, on the balance of probabilities and on the basis of the evidence before the panel, that she had not committed the violation intentionally.

Who will get the gold medal now?

Kamila’s disqualification will impact the list of winners in figure skating. In the games, Olieva won gold for Russia, the United States won silver, and Japan won Bronze. However, after the verdict, the United States will capture the gold.
