Why do we celebrate April Fool’s Day? History of April Fool’s Day.

Well, numerous stories or theories are there to justify the origin and celebration of April Fool’s Day. The most authentic and relatable theory comes from France in the 16th century. According to the history books, before 1582 France was using the Julian calendar. 

In 1582, under the reign of King Henry III, France adopted the Gregorian Calendar, replacing the Julian Calendar which had been the most popular until then. The decision to make this switch had been made earlier by the Council of Trent in 1563.

Prior to the implementation of this change, New Year’s celebrations typically occurred around the end of March, coinciding with the arrival of spring. However, with the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar, the date of New Year shifted from the beginning of April to January 1st.

Every new thing took time to be implemented completely. Though the official works were easily changed according to the new calendar, some people still stuck to the old calendar. Some were confused while adjusting according to the Gregorian calendar, while some were not happy with this implementation. 

Origin of April Fool’s Day

Due to the confusion stemming from the calendar change, there were individuals celebrating New Year on January 1st, while others adhered to the traditional date of April 1st. Consequently, those following the official Gregorian Calendar began to mock those still observing the old Julian Calendar, dubbing them “April Fools.”

Over time, this practice evolved into a cultural tradition known as April Fool’s Day, where people play pranks and practical jokes on each other, continuing the playful mockery that originated from the calendar discrepancy.

A clue to the origin of April Fool’s Day is found in a 1561 poem by Flemish poet Eduard de Dene, where a nobleman sends his servant on ridiculous errands on April 1st. This anecdote hints at the playful tradition of pranking associated with the day.

1. Party fun: Simply invite your friends to a party, and when they come, ask them for party arrangements. Show that there is no arrangement on your side, and when they start leaving the place, reveal the secret. Don’t forget to arrange everything in a hidden area.
