Legendary songwriter Richard Sherman dies at the age of 95

Richard Sherman wrote many popular songs for Disney. His classics include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins. 

The popular songwriter for Disney films has passed away at the age of 95. He was known for many of his hit lyrics, like Mary Poppins. The Walt Disney Company announced his death on May 25. 

According to the announcement, Richard Sherman breathed his last breath at a Beverly Hills, California, hospital. The two-time Oscar-winning songwriter passed away due to natural causes. As per the Walt Disney announcement, Sherman was suffering from some age-related diseases. 

In a lengthy statement, Walt Disney mentioned many of his achievements as a part of Disney. In collaboration with his late brother Robert Sharman, Richard Sherman received two Academy Awards for Mary Poppins. 

Richard Sherman’s illustrious 65-year career was marked by three Grammy awards and an impressive collection of 24 gold and platinum albums, a testament to his musical genius and enduring popularity. 

The Sherman Brothers’ journey with Walt Disney began with their first assignment, The Horsemasters. This initial collaboration paved the way for a fruitful partnership, with Richard and his brother becoming integral to the company and penning numerous iconic songs. 

Richard M Sherman’s Work 

In addition to 1964’s Mary Poppins, the duo worked on 27 films and 24 television productions. They wrote over 200 songs for Walt Disney movies. Some of their popular projects include The Parent Trap (1961), The Absent-Minded Professor (1961), Mary Poppins (1964), That Darn Cat (1965), Winnie The Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), etc. 

Sherman Brothers were first to win 1st Prize at the Moscow Film Festival in 1973. In addition, the duo was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. 

Richard Sherman’s family includes his wife Elizabeth, son Gregory, and grandsons William and Matthew. His daughter, Victoria Wolf, and son-in-law, Doug Wolf, are also members of his family.
